JUNE 21:INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA
- YOGA is the 5,000 year-old Indian Physical,mental and spiritual practice that aim to transform body and mind.
- Prime Minister Modi proposed the idea,in the UN general Assembly on 27-09-2014 and the resolution on "INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA" was introduced by India's ambassador to UN Asoke Mukherji.Less than 3 months after the proposal, the UN General Assembly adopted an India-led resolution declaring June 21 as "INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA",recognising that Yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well- being.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- The resolution had 175 nations joining as co-sponsors, the highest number ever for any General Assembly resolution.
- The initial official document circulated to the General Assembly,known as the L document,had 130 member states joining as co-sponsors,again the highest number of co-sponsors for such a document.
- It is also for the first time that such an initiative has been proposed and implemented by any country in the UN body in less than 90 days.
- The resolution was adopted under the agenda of "Global Health and Foreign Policy".

1)BAN KI-MOON(United Nations(UN) Secretary General):
- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said,"Yoga can contribute to resilience against non-communicable diseases and can bring communities together in an inclusive manner that generates respect.Yoga is a sport that can contribute to development and peace and can even help people in emergency situations to find relief from stress".
2)NARENDRA MODI(India's Prime Minister):
- Narendra Modi said,"It embodies unity of mind and body;thought and action;restraint and fulfillment;harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being.
- It beautifully combines Gyan(Knowledge),Karm(Work)and Bhakti(Devotion).
3)Yoga Experts around India:
- Yoga Experts hailed the UN decision saying that it is a proud moment for Indian's that Yoga has been recognised in a formal way Internationally and that it would greatly boost the ancient Indian science.
- Some experts expressed that India has made the greatest contribution mankind's evolution with the science of Yoga and Self-realization and it is indeed gratifying to see such widespread acknowledgement of her gift.
MY OPINION:
- I personally feel that, although it came late,atleast now the world came together to acknowledge the importance of yoga, the rich history that it has got and it's importance in the evolution of mankind.
- It is playing and will continue to play a vital role in the day-to-day life of mankind in the future because the world around us is becoming more and more complex and YOGA is one the tools that is definitely going to relive our mental stress and tension.
- It is a proud moment for all the Indians and we should continue to practice yoga for our well-being both physically and mentally.
